Convergence Partners devotes 67 minutes to Mandela Day
For our 67 minutes of giving on Mandela Day, the Convergence Partners team visited the children’s ward at Rahima Moosa Hospital in Coronationville. Two Matron, Mrs Steyn and Mrs Thomas where kind enough to show us around and give us a background of the hospital and what they specialise in and the team took along toys, books, and lego for the children to play with. The kids were excited and overwhelmed by the gifts and attention. A brightness filled the room as the children warmed up to us and spoke to us, showed us the pictures they were colouring in and joined us in building lego.
Convergence Partners was proud to play its small role in the special Mandela Day initiatives to heal our communities.
About Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital
Medical and nursing staff at Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital treat between 25 000 and 30 000 patients annually, while over 3 000 are admitted to the hospitals four in-patient wards each year. (A smaller number of orthopaedic, ENT and dental patients are also admitted, usually for short procedures.) More than 10 000 births occur annually at RMMCH, creating a very busy neonatal unit with a six-bed NICU, a premature unit, and a Kangaroo Mother Care program. This neonatal unit admits an average of just under 2 000 babies each year, most of whom are born prematurely.
The Paediatric HIV Unit at RMMCH holds five clinics each week as well as a separate adolescent clinic. Medical staff in these clinics have already succeeded in starting over 1 000 patients on anti-retroviral therapy. Many of these patients are admitted to a ward at some point in their illness, the result of which is that HIV makes up approximately 60-80% of the ward case load.
Specialist follow-up clinics include neonatal, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, genetics, epilepsy, and Asthma. The largest and busiest of these clinics is the neuro-developmental clinic, which sees approximately 2 500 patients per year.
